Driver Rehabilitation Evaluation

A Driver Rehabilitation Evaluation may be necessary following a change in physical abilities, post-hospitalization, or other health-related impairments that could affect community mobility skills and safety.

This assessment will include a clinical and an on-the-road assessment. The clinical evaluation will include driving-specific tasks, typical neuromuscular assessments, and cognitive, visual, and visual perceptual activities. If you use a wheelchair or assistive mobility device, we will also assess options regarding loading and stowing this device in a vehicle.

Our on-road assessment will take a standardized route to assess typical driving maneuvers or in a parking lot if introduced to adaptive driving equipment and other specific situations for the first time.

Following this assessment, our evaluator will provide you with a recommendation regarding community mobility and any required services.

Driver Education for Individuals with Disabilities

Rehabilitation of Frederick is a Maryland MVA Certified Driver Education program. We are licensed and certified to teach the Maryland standardized curriculum to novice drivers with special needs. Rehabilitation of Frederick works with commercial driving schools across the state to provide adaptive behind-the-wheel drivers education for all kinds of disabilities. To recieve these services, the state of Maryland requires a Restricted Learners Permit as part of the graduated license system requirement.

Vehicle Modification Fitting & Training

Rehabilitation of Frederick works with each consumer and their chosen mobility vendor to provide appropriate fitting and functional inspections following adaptive training. A final fitting inspection is required as part of a comprehensive adaptive driving plan of care. The final fitting is to ensure that all industry standards have been met and the vehicle prescription has been followed to meet the individuals adaptive driving needs. Follow up training is often required for high-tech driving systems prior to final delivery to make sure any necessary adjustments are made prior to independent driving.

Requirements to participate in a Driver Rehabilitation Evaluation:

Rehabilitation of Frederick requires a referral to participate in the program. To coordinate this referral, we work closely with physicians, vocational rehab counselors from the surrounding states, workers’ compensation, and the motor vehicle administration Driver Wellness and Safety Division. Referral processes will be discussed case-by-case to ensure we receive the appropriate referral based on the disability and the driving implications.

Once you are ready to pursue independence in driving, call us to schedule your appointment for your driver evaluation. Before this evaluation, you will need the following:

  • A doctor’s prescription is required for an Adaptive Driving evaluation and training. This prescription may say “Drivers Evaluation and Training.”
  • A valid driver’s license or learner’s permit is required for participation in an Adaptive Driving evaluation outside of a closed course setting on any public highway system. All training at the program requires a valid permit or license issued by the state licensing authority. Parking lot assessments for novice drivers do not need a permit and will only be completed in a closed course setting to evaluate adaptive equipment and potential.
  • A list of your current medications and why you take them will also help complete the paperwork.

Payment/Authorization requirements:

If you plan to have a third-party pay for this assessment, authorization must be received in our office before scheduling the assessment and training appointments.
